Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Chateau de Chambord in Chambord, France located in the Valley of the Kings.

Time

This was late afternoon early evening. They close the doors at 6PM so this was taken around 6:30 or so.

Lighting

You can tell that the sun is low and behind me and to my right from the shadows on the building giving me directional lighting to bring out the features of the Chateau.

Equipment

Canon 5DMark iii - EF24-105. Gitzo Travel Tripod with Really Right Stuff ballhead and quick release plate and a wireless remote shutter.

Inspiration

Visiting this amazing building I knew I wanted to try and photograph this work of art. It is truly a work of art inside and out and trying to capture the shear size is a challenge. I knew I wanted late afternoon light so I waited until after closing to try and get the directional light and seeing the moat I was hoping that I could also get a reflection of the chateau. I took several shots at different angles and finally chose to setup my tripod directly in front. Using the reflection and moat wall as my foreground and the path to draw you to the doors as the chateau rises out of the grassy lawn. It was one of the highlights of our trip to France!

Editing

Some post-processing. I exported to Photoshop for sharpening back to Lightroom to use the sliders for highlights, saturation, luminescence and slightly cropped the photo to fill the frame with the chateau.

In my camera bag

When I am traveling I have several lens that I like to bring; Canons: 24-105mm; 28-300mm; 17-40mm. I also bring my speedlite 580EXii Flash and Transmitter ST-E2. RPS Studio wireless remote shutter, Shoot Intervolometer. Additionally I pack Batteries with chargers for both camera and flash, extra SD and CF cards and finally cleaning solution and tissues. I also bring a point and shoot camera the Lumix DMC-LX7. This is all packed in my Think Tank camera bag which I carry on the plane.

Feedback

Photography is photographing light - we live with it but we really don't think about how different light can enhance or take away from our subject. When photographing buildings or distant hills or mountains by waiting until later in the day or getting up early in the morning the slanted light will bring out patterns and colors that get washed when the sun is overhead. Become aware of the different quality of light in the early AM or late PM. This will educate your eye to see light in a different way and hopefully increase your chances of capturing that wow photograph we all want in our galleries. Try and visualize what you want in your shot and test a few places to see. Our eyes are so much more sensitive than the sensor of your camera so what we see is not always what we record. And use the histogram to check for clipping. On a side note bringing a tripod is great for these landscape shots but also when traveling with your husband, you can set up the tripod with a wireless remote and after a few tries you've got a photo with the two of you. Worth packing just for that! Happy Clicking to you..
