Location
Living in West Virginia, there are quite a few opportunities to photograph Whitetail Deer. After a few years, I had made a photograph of every kind of behavior and pose of a deer that was possible. I look for that "Outdoor Life" pose at this point. That's what I captured here.Time
I had noticed that the deer had started moving a little earlier in the afternoon. I was going to the mailbox (over a mile from my doorstep) everyday at 2:00 P.M. I never leave the house without a camera, even for a quick trip to pick up the day's mail. This Whitetail doe was feeding in the field adjacent to the mailboxes and padi little attention to me as long as the vehicle was moving. I picked up the mail and traveled at half my normal speed until I was in a spot I was sure to get a few frames off in case she made a break for the forest. She did move a couple of times and finally she struck this pose, I suppose toget a better look at me. That's when this frame was captured.Lighting
This was late-midday but the skies were partly cloudy. With these deer, may be all deer, their color goes to that burnt orange shade when the lighting is just so. I think I got pretty darn close.Equipment
This was made with the Nikon D90, equipped with a Nikkor 75 to 240mm zoom lens, iso 800 @ 1/200.Inspiration
I grew up reading all the outdoor magazines. I would marvel over the photography. I' ve become more selective about photographs over the years. While I don't let the stutter fly on every trip away from the house, when I do I get this result more often than not.Editing
This was shot in RAW and observed through the Nikon software. I don't remember doing much to it. Everything just kind of clicked (a-hem) that dayIn my camera bag
I usually carry the D90 with at least 3 lenses. the zoom used here, a 35mm, and 35mm-85mm, a tripod, and a Nikkor 500mm, AP f8 lens.Feedback
Patience, keep shooting, get selective and remember that, as Ansel Adams stated, "Pictures are taken, photographs are made."
