Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. It was about 18Km from the Phabeni Gate on my way out of the park.

Time

This shot was taken at about 14h00 the afternoon.

Lighting

Not much can be said about the lighting, reason being when capturing wildlife one does not have much control over the lighting and especially when you may not leave your vehicle so as to position yourself in a better position to the sun etc. camera settings are therefore very important to compensate for difficult lighting.

Equipment

I shot this with my old trustworthy Canon 500D with a Sigma 70-300mm lens which I had set to macro. The shot was taken while hand holding the camera and lens.

Inspiration

While driving I came across these Zebra and the way they were standing looking in both directions inspired me immediately and therefore I captured the shot.

Editing

Very little post processing was done, mainly did some contrast work and then placed my signature on the photo.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Canon 500D with a Sigma 70-300mm, Sigma 150-500mm and a Canon 50mm lens. I will always have my tripod in the vehicle in case I get a chance to use it.

Feedback

Well firstly when photographing in a game park travel slowly so that you can take in the environment and have a better chance of spotting animals and their different ways and traits. Something I never had with me that is very important when taking photo's from a vehicle is a bean bay to secure your camera and lens. Then lastly if you really want to capture wildlife you must have a love and passion for wildlife and be patient when out there, by just sitting and watching them you will be surprised as to how they react naturally and can make for great shots.
