Location
I took this photo at Rilke promenade, in Trieste, Italy.Time
It was in the afternoon.Lighting
The light was the wonderful compromise of the light before sunset and the light of the late afternoon, with some clouds and mist that gived me a wonderful horizon. This horizonwas there and there was not, let us say. That boat passed very slowly. Wonderful scene.Equipment
Canon 1100D, 50mm lens, no tripod. So very simple.Inspiration
The scene was really quiet and the panorama was so evocative that day, that it was impossible not to take a picture of that. I really love this image. I think it speaks by itself: a lonely boat passing slowly and looking to the infinite. I liked also that the horizon was there but so confused with mist that you can say there is no horizon. So poetic.Editing
I turned in black and white and adjusted the contrast. That's all.In my camera bag
It depends where I must go and what I must do. I usually have two and more batteries to feel safe. In my bag i take the wide lens and the 70-300mm. The Canon 24-70 2.8 is a must.Feedback
Well I think that luck plays an important role too, in a photographer's work. Like Gianni Berengo Gardin said, one has to be lucky also! But more specifically, I think one must learn to wait. The most beautiful landscape requires some attention to details and how these details work with the background. When I was looking to the panorama I saw the boat coming so slowly that I realised I had to wait. Also the direction of the boat is important, for me. It was crucial for me that the boat was sailing to the right side and to compose the image having a lot of "empty" space in the boat's back. This is important for the message: one has to live the past behind, without forgetting it. If the boat had got too much space in front of it, the message could have been different. Rule of the third is a must, also. Now go out and shoot! ;)
