This photo was taken on a safari in Kenya Africa. We were riding along the road when we saw this lion resting after eating his food. So the truck stopped and the lion looked up and then rolled over to look right at us. So I snap as many photos as I could then picked out the best one. I did not see this one until I was home in the states. This photo hangs in my hall way. Also I have sent this photo to many people. This is one of my good photos I have taken over the years.. I love it when people love my pictures and I'm so blessed to have gotten the shot.Time
This was taken at 6am in the morning, as the safari was awakening to greet the morning light. You could see the mist on the savannah and the stillness of the air was amazing.Lighting
This was one of those times where the sunlight was in the back of the lion and the reflection of the white van gave off and nice white light to capture the perfect lighting. to get this shot with artificial light would have taken some time to get. So if you where using a gold reflector and some soft box lighting then maybe we would have the perfect lighting.Equipment
I was using a Cannon power shot digital camera. no tripod, or lighting. it was just a point and shoot, shoot, shoot to get the perfect shot. Also no flash was used in taken this picture.Inspiration
To have a lion look right at you and stare into your lens is one in a million. If I could I would have jump out off the van and set myself as close as I could get. Sometimes things.people, objects just present themselves right in front of you, and you must take the shot. I know a lot of people take photos of animals, but this one for me was like all the planets alined up and said , Hey you ,take the shot. I did !! You can see the hairs on his face and the outline of his eyes, just amazing. I still find myself saying WOW did I take this shot, YES I did. I love it!!Editing
I did hi light the saturation for the color and soften the background using the Mac Book Pro editor. That was all I needed to do to this photo, because the subject was right , the light was right and the framing was spot on.In my camera bag
I do have the Cannon power shot, my IPhone 6, a gold and silver reflector, I carry two tripod stand, mono pod as well a a pro selfie stick, I know you say "a selfie Stick" Yes it screws down on to my tripod and then I can get some cool arial shots. I also have a LED light I carry as well to give me some extra light I might need.Feedback
When you are looking to take a shot of something or a subject or a on the fly moment, you need to be ready. Sometime you can prepare for it but, most of the time it just happen in an moments time. Take as many pictures of the one thing you are shooting, the more, the better options you have from different angles to get the shot. Remember everything looks different to other people so trust yourself and trust your prospective of what you are shooting. If you do not get the shot that is ok. there will be another time to get it, that is why I tell new photographers to shoot a lot of frames on one subject, you might be surprised by what you get when you see your photos. I still amaze myself when I think I did not get the shot then I realize hey, I did get the shot.. Trust wh you are as a photographer. Peace, Love and Pictures.
