Location
I took this photo in our garden. The flowers we grow and the insects they attract are frequent subjects for me.Time
It was late afternoon when there was a nice slant to the sun.Lighting
I love capturing images with natural light and shadows.Equipment
I use an iPhone 5.Inspiration
I saw the butterfly fluttering around the cone flowers and moved slowly over there to see if I could position myself for a shot.Editing
I only use Apple Photos for post processing. For color nature shots I typically do small adjustments across the range of options that Apple offers. In this case I lightened the shadows a bit while also balancing the contrast for clarity and to show the glow of the sunlight in a natural way. I then cropped the image for the best dramatic effect. In my camera bag
I don't use any equipment other than my iPhone 5.Feedback
The key to getting opportunistic shots like this is having your camera (or smart phone :) ) with you and, and when you spot an opportunity, positioning yourself with due speed and deliberation to make the most of the moment.
