Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my university, The University of the Witwatersrand, in South Africa. I'm in the school of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, and this is the stairs to go to the below ground levels of our building, Richard Ward. Funny story, the ground floor of the building is actually the third floor. And we have another staircase outside the building to reach the first and second floors, hey that's what you get when the wrong type of engineers try designing a building.

Time

This was actually pretty spontaneous, it was back in 2014, when I was a first year, and it was my first time entering our building, it was practically the end of the year at this point, I saw the spiral stairs with their motivating and demotivating words and was kinda inspired. The exact time of this pic tho is, 24 October 2014, 2:52PM.

Lighting

At the time I was still getting into my passion for photography, I never really thought about lighting or composition when I took a photo. I literally just moved my dad's camera or my phone around until I liked what I saw.

Equipment

Since I was away at school, my dad was not lending me his camera and I bought my own only last June (2015), this was taken on my old Sony Xperia Z phone. Sometimes the best moments are best captured by the simplest of means.

Inspiration

I love staircases, especially spiral ones. And this particular set of stairs had words with the opposite effects as you went up or down, we keep to the left here in South Africa. As you walked up, you saw the words; rise, soar and climb. And if you were descending you were greeted with spill and tumble. I was pretty intrigued.

Editing

Well, as I mentioned above, I hadn't honed any skills at that point, so I'm pretty sure I slapped a basic instagram filter on it and posted it with whatever hashtags I could think off. Oh, how far I've come.

In my camera bag

Now that I saved up to get my own gear, you'll find me with a Nikon D3200, with the two basic lenses; 18-55mm and 55-200mm. I have two SD cards as you never want to run out space now do you? If I can, I'm lugging my tripod around as well, you never know when you might need it! I don't know if this counts but I stuff my bag with a quick snack, some gum, a spot of cash, tissues and sometimes even make up!

Feedback

Staircases are fun. You get to play with angles, lighting, people on them, people not existing. Go with what your gut says, sometimes that bad lighting or someone walking into your 'perfect' shot makes it even better. Aerial views of staircases are always a winner tho, sometimes it gives you perspective and sometimes it's just aesthetics...
