Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my living room during breakfast.

Time

I love taking photos of my pets in our front window. The window is large and lets a lot of light in and I always seem to get great shots of them there. This shot was taken earlier in the morning not too long after I woke up that day. The window faces East so a lot of light was coming in at that time.

Lighting

In general I like to shoot with very dramatic lighting. I think one of the reasons this shot works so well is because it's almost as if the lighting and the expression in the cat's eyes are matching. The light is bright and intense and the look in her eyes in intense.

Equipment

I shot this with my trusty Canon 60D and I believe I used my 70-300mm lens. I used that particular lens so that I could get nice shots without having to be up in the cat's space.

Inspiration

I am always inspired by my cats. If I were to post all of the photos I have of my cats I'm sure everyone would think I'm a little crazy. They can have such expressive faces and looks in their eyes. During this particular shoot I noticed that my cat saw some birds outside so she was very still and focused. The look you see here is that of a hunter. A hunter that is watching its prey. I think if she had just been nonchalantly staring outside in this photo it wouldn't have been as successful.

Editing

I didn't do too much post-processing for this shot. Just a little bit of sharpening so that the eye would pop more and I believe I adjusted the levels some to increase contrast.

In my camera bag

I always bring my 3 staple lenses with me which are my Canon 70-300mm, my EFS 60mm, and my 18-135mm. Right now I'm currently working on a series where I'm strictly using my 60mm which has been so much fun. I would love to get a new camera body and a few new lenses but for now I'm fairly happy with the equipment I have.

Feedback

I would say my best advice would be to use a lens that allows you to get a zoomed in shot without having to get too close to your subject. The farther away you are the more likely it is that you'll get a shot of them acting in line with their instincts. And that pureness is what you want. Patience is also important. Be still, be patient, and be ready to grab those special shots when they arise.
