Hitting the teen years in just a few months time, my daughter is changing and growing. She wasn't in a smiley mood on the day of this photo. I couldn't help but think of Shakespeare's quote... "Though she be but little, she is fierce."

Location
I took this photo next the side of the road in our neighbourhood. I often see great spots whilst out driving.Time
It was late afternoon - about 5pm. I love to photograph during the golden hour - but this area is surrounded by trees and hills which makes it difficult to see the sun setting in the West.Lighting
I love natural light and always try to place my subject so that I can see catchlights in their eyes. I want to achieve natural skin tones so that is what I expose for.Equipment
Nikon D700, Nikkor 85mm f/1.4,Inspiration
We drove past a maple tree on our way home from school. The leaves were in full autumn display and it looked so vibrant and pretty. I was immediately inspired to go back and capture images of my daughter there. I love to capture images of my growing family as well as scout for new locations to take clients to.Editing
My photographs are always saved in RAW format. I like to express my artistic style through post-processing so that is important to me. I make some basic adjustments in Lightroom to correct white balance, exposure, and reduce any clipping in highlights and blacks. From there, I open the file in Photoshop and custom edit using adjustment layers. After converting this image to black and white using a gradient adjustment layer, I dodged and burned to make it more dramatic and improve the tonal range. In my camera bag
I always carry one of my favourite prime lenses: 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.4, as well as two zoom lenses. 24-70mm, 70-200mm in my bag. I keep my color checker passport and two reflectors on hand as well.Feedback
I always shoot as wide open as possible when it comes to portraits. The 85mm is my favourite portrait lens because it is super sharp and has beautiful bokeh. I'd also recommend using a 70-200mm zoom lens at 200mm. For added drama, dodge and burn in Photoshop after you have converted the image to black and white using the gradient map tool for best results. The eyes are the most important feature so focus on the eye that is closest to you. Always shoot in manual mode to achieve correct exposure for the skin.
