Location
This photo was taken in a bowling alley car park that has a tendency to hold water which was perfect for what I needed. Plus the car park lines helped lead the eye into the middle of the photo.Time
I can’t quite remember exactly the time it was taken but I do remember I had to do it between rain showers as the droplets would disturb the puddles and you couldn’t see the reflections.Lighting
I did wish the lighting could have been better - I was hoping for more definition and detail. But the clouds worked great in the reflection!Equipment
I had a canon 550d at the time and used an 18-200mm lens with tripod as it’s actually me and my husband in shot so had to use a timer. I also needed a separate pair of trainers for us both for the exposure without us standing in it.Inspiration
I was very new to photography at the time and was a member of a camera club. That months competition was Reflections. I really wanted to do something different and thought, well, how can a reflection not be a reflection…. Initially I was just going to have us in the reflection but thought the trainers gave another level to it making it look like we just disappeared but our reflection stayed. We had to be very careful to place the trainers exactly where we stood. I think I could have done it better now, maybe a more interesting pose, but was under a bit of time pressure.Editing
Yes, I merged 2 exposures in photoshop: one with puddle and trainers and one with us and the puddle. I simply erased us from the original image leaving just the trainers shot and our reflections. Then tweaked the levels for more definition in the light and dark areas as well as converting to black & white. I’d love to do it again maybe in hdr.In my camera bag
I now have a canon 5d mark iii and my trusty 24-70mm lens and 50mm. Plus my canon flashgun. I also keep my 550d with 55-200mm lens handy too.Feedback
If it’s going to be you in the photo, Think of the pose in the reflection before you shoot. I left it a little late and got what I could with the weather changing and a husband who’s patience was waning. Better still, use models!!!
