Behind The Lens

Location

I was on vacation in Outer Banks, North Carolina. This photo was taken in front of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse.

Time

It was in the evening, just as the sun was setting. It was crazy to stand there and watch this storm roll in. It was so windy and sand was getting in my eyes, but the end results were worth it.

Lighting

There was just enough light to brighten up the lighthouse but not enough to wash out the storm, which made the lighting perfect. My source of light was the faint sunset that was starting to disappear behind clouds.

Equipment

I used my Sony NEX-F3 and a cheap, little tripod that I found at Walmart.

Inspiration

As I watched this storm roll in I just had to jump in the car and follow it. I saw the lighthouse and thought it would be the perfect foreground for my shot. I sat there and waited for the perfect shot. Other photographers were there too but when the storm started to get closer most of them left till I was the only person in the parking lot. It was so windy that clouds of dust were starting to blow around, I was afraid of the sand scratching my lens.I tried to stay out for as long as I could before the rain could ruin my equipment. I waited till the storm was almost on top of the lighthouse I started to shoot till I got the perfect shot. Then I had to run to my car, it was about to rain. I made it just in time and my equipment was safe.

Editing

My editing skills are minimal so the only thing I did to this photo was turn it B&W and maybe add contrast. The B&W really brought out the storm and made it the central focus. When it was in color it didn't look as cool, the green grass and the red bricks on the chimney were too distracting, the storm didn't seem as spectacular in color.

In my camera bag

At the time I was just a beginner so I didn't have much in my bag. The only thing I took that trip was my Sony NEX-F3, 55mm lens, and a cheap tripod. I now have a 210mm lens, filters, macro lens, wide angle lens, Sony NEX-F3, and I carry around my higher class tripod.

Feedback

Don't be afraid of the storm. Protect your equipment. Find an interesting foreground. Waiting for the perfect shot is sometimes a little risky.
