Behind The Lens

Location

I shot This Herreschoff S-Boat in a cove off the Mystic River in Noank,CT.

Time

I went out early in the morning anticipating a fog. I waited for the fog to partially clear to reveal the boat and obscure the distracting background.

Lighting

The soft light diffused by the weather condition and the smooth water surface produced a mysterious effect adding to the drama of the photo.

Equipment

I used a first generation Nikon digital camera (D-70) with kit zoom lens. It's funny. i've been chasing digital cameras since I reluctantly switched from analogue. My search for the best technology took me through generation after generation of Nikons. This image which I love was shot years ago and reminds me It's not the camera that makes the photo!

Inspiration

I was in the process of restoring an S-Boat of our own and used Nightmare for inspiration.

Editing

I converted the raw image into a Quadtone and cloned some fog patches to even the background.

In my camera bag

My current favorite is a Sony A7S. I normally cary Zeiss 35,50 and 90mm manual focus lenses originally part of my Zeiss Contax G2 film camera kit. I like the Sony (in part) because I can adapt the Contax, Nikon and Leica legacy lenses I've collected over the years.

Feedback

I had plenty of time to make this photo. I had seen the conditions before and knew what to expect. It's a stylized image of a popular genre that inspired me so I waited for the opportunity
