Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Smash Palace, a long established car wreckers yard at Horopito in the Central North Island, New Zealand. There are acres and acres of old wrecks dating back to the 1930's. The interiors of the cars are also amazing to photograph - beautiful old leather seats with springs and stuffing oozing out, wooden dashboards with cracked & peeling varnish, lovely chrome instruments, amazing bumpers and front grills, engine innards spread around giving an air of disembowelment.

Time

Late morning, it was a freezing cold day and the sun was scudding in and out from the clouds.

Lighting

No special lighting, I recall framing up the shot, noticing that it was a bit glory, then waiting till the sun started slipping behind some light cloud.

Equipment

This was shot on a small Lumix DMC-ZR1 when I was just starting to develop an interest in photography. Basically, it was just point and shoot.

Inspiration

I love going to Smash Palace, these beautiful old cars are just lying around slowly, but beautifully, rusting and disintegrating with age in the harsh climate there. When I downloaded the images I just felt the need to bring some life to the wrecks, to create a perspective that expressed how I felt when I was doing the shoot. Once, they were beautiful and prized possessions, I wanted to bring some splendour to their rustiness - hence my series "Rusty Splendour."

Editing

I downloaded into iPhoto and just tweaked contrast, shadows, highlights, black point, till I got the look I wanted.

In my camera bag

Now I have an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark 2 with 40 - 150mm lens which I am absolutely loving. Four ND filters (2,4,10), trusty tripod and that's all at this stage. Remote shutter release is next on the shopping list.

Feedback

I'm a beginner, I just read a wide range of Photography magazines & Blogs, make notes that seem relevant to my emerging style of capturing images, and then go out and try different things. I don't have a lot of fancy gear, I'm fairly relaxed, don't feel any intensity or pressure to be perfect, I don't always follow compositional rules. Sometimes success comes from thinking outside the square. I have a penchant for seeking a different perspective and usually come up with a rough plan for a day "out in the field" and then just indulge the vibes I feel when I get there. I prefer to go by myself on days like this and not have any time pressure. This particular image just presented itself - I framed up and just waited for the sun to disappear.
