Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Bridal Veil fall which flows into the Storr Lochs in Trotternish, Isle of Skye.

Time

The shot was taken in the late afternoon.

Lighting

It was one of those "four seasons in a single day" occasions which are fairly frequent in the west of Scotland. With the clouds racing across the sky, the falls were alternately in sunshine and shade, as were the cliffs of The Storr in the background. It took several attempts to get the result I was after - the falls in sunlight against the shady brooding Storr.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D, Canon EFS 17-85mm zoom, tripod.

Inspiration

I liked the view - simple as that. What other reason could there be?

Editing

The majority of my shots are HDR processed (3 shots @ ±2EV) in Photomatix and Photoshop CS5. Photomatix is simply used to blend the 3 shots and to give me an image with a full tonal range (no burnt-out highlights, no impenetrable shadows) on which I can subsequently work with CS5.

In my camera bag

It varies, depending on what I'm doing. These days, the bag usually contains Canon EOS 5D and 7D bodies, Canon 17-40mm zoom, Canon 24-105mm zoom (my workhorse), Canon 100-400mm zoom. I also use a selection of ND and graduated ND filters. The most important bit of kit I have is contained in the 12" behind the camera viewfinder.

Feedback

Be patient. Pick your spot, decide on what lighting would give you the best result and then wait for it to happen. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you're not - that's the way it goes. If you're going to have a bash at a shot of this fall, wear welly boots - you have to wade through the stream to get to this spot.
