Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in Sotra island. It's an island close to the second biggest city in Norway, Bergen. At this place you can see the North Sea with very little islands in it. You need to hike a little bit if you want to see the beauty of the Ocean.

Time

Sunset. I love sunsets, because if you want to catch a sunset you don't need to wake up very early. And for this particular photo the sun was setting in to the North Sea lighting up the rocky shore.

Lighting

Beautiful and soft sunset light. No other lighting equipment was used here. Sometimes is worth trying to shoot directly in to the sun, right?

Equipment

Sone Nex 6, Sony SEL1018 wide angle zoom lense, 10 Stop ND filter for 25 second long exposure, small and wobbly Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

Sometimes best inspiration is to get outside to a beautiful place and just enjoy. Of course, while living in Bergen, the city of rain, any sight of upcoming sunset works too.

Editing

ND filter did the job for silky water. All the rest I did in Lightroom, open shadows, close down the highlights, set white and black points. Later some local adjustments to make the rocks pop out a bit. Finally I removed sensor dust using Spot healing brush in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I upgraded from Nex 6 to A7II. This body is always with me. Plus I carry SEL1018, 10 to 18mm wide angle lens and SEL24240 super zoom. 10 Stop ND filter, cleaning stuff, extra batteries, remote control, couple of extra SD cards and some food. Manfrotto 055XPROB goes to the side of bag and I am ready to go!

Feedback

Don't wait! If you see the opportunity for a great shot just go and get it! Sitting on the couch will not get you photos witch you can be proud of and will not make you a better photographer. Going out will. And not only when the weather conditions are perfect. Sometimes your shot can be hiding somewhere, you just need to find it.
