Behind The Lens

Location

I have been a Christian Music photographer for a few years now. I travel all over the country and donate my time and camera to promote the bands that ask me for assistance with imaging and graphic art. This photo was captured during Third Day's performance at Elitch Garden's Amphitheater in Denver Colorado.

Time

Shooting concert photography is extremely challenging. This was an outdoor venue and this shot was right after "magic hour". For those of you who shoot concert photography as well, you know the horrors of "red lights". Fortunately, Third Day has an amazing light set for nearly every venue and situation on tour.

Lighting

The lights raise and lower behind the band at random. This was a six light set that lowered behind Mac Powell right at the perfect moment he was into his vocals. I could not have asked for a better situation. In concert photography, you can shoot 400-600 shots and only get 5-10 gems from the group. I was very fortunate to capture what I believe to be one of my best concert shots possible.

Equipment

I shoot with Sony A550. Shot with a sony prime 50mm f1.8 if I remember correctly.

Inspiration

My love for music is my passion. I know and have photographed many Christian Rock bands that can go toe to toe with any other bands out there. My compassion is my passion. So I do what I love most.

Editing

I usually use Topaz labs for some of my post processing. Makes my images crisp and clean.

In my camera bag

Oh man, what don't I have. I try everything from Gary Fong to aluminum foil to deflect light for flash. You may look in my bag and see something crazy I might be trying and be scratching your head for weeks.

Feedback

Front row, I cannot stress enough to be up front. Make sure the venue allows DSLR's if you are not with the band and have a security pass to get you in "the lane". Start with a local band. You never know if they are going to get signed and help you get to the bigger bands down the road. Oh yea, BRING YOUR EARPLUGS. Worst mistake I ever made on my first shoot. I still hear the phone ringing from time to time from that.
