Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the Howell Nature Center, in Howell MI. They sponsor annual photo shoots for photographers as a fund raiser for the injured animals for which they provide care. The grounds provide excellent student education. The days shoot starts with a lunch and lecture by a professional photographer.

Time

The time was mid afternoon in October.

Lighting

We were lucky to get a cloudy day that provided perfect light for detail and color.

Equipment

For this outing I was using a Nikon D700 with a 28-300 mm lens. Tripods were encouraged and gave us a great opportunity to get some great photos. No flash was necessary due to the perfect light.

Inspiration

My friend and I make the shoots a must attend event. The nature center has a number of injured but beautiful birds of prey and animals that they care for so the event is perfect for photographers. The handlers are professionals and close to the animals. The grounds of the center make for some nice settings.

Editing

The lighting gave us great raws to start with but I used Adobe Lightroom to finish. The raw was cropped, sharpened, and the highlights were dropped.

In my camera bag

I recently moved from a Nikon D700 to a D800. My go to lens for most shoots is the Nikon 28-300 mm lens. Also, there are lots of batteries, chips and lens cleaning equipment.

Feedback

If you can not get to an expensive shoot, look locally for great opportunities such as butterfly houses in the spring or nature centers fall and winter. Many places have botanical gardens with beautiful displays.
