Night time, about 12:30AM at the darkest point in the night.Lighting
I calculated when the Milky Way would be overhead with an iPhone app and set up for the shot 30 minutes ahead of time. The final image is a composite of 2 shots, one for the sky and one for the canyon walls.Equipment
Canon 6D, Canon 15MM 2.8, TripodInspiration
The night skies in Moab are know to be some of the darkest and best places to photograph the Milky Way.Editing
Yes, the final image is a composite of 2 images. One was a proper exposure for the sky and stars, and since there were bonfires burning and reflecting light off the canyon walls, the walls required much less exposure. In my camera bag
Canon 6D, Canon 24-70 F2.8, Canon 70-200 F4, Canon 15mm F2.8, tripod!Feedback
Find a place as far from light pollution as possible and figure out when the sky will be moonless to see the most possible stars in an exposure. The rest is up to sitting under the stars and figuring out your exposure!
