Location
The photo was shot at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. This museum has hundreds of vintage aircraft on display both outside and inside five different large hangers everything from helicopters to B-29 Bombers. The photographic possibilities are endless.Time
Because of Tucson's desert climate, conditions can be hot with bright sunlight. I intentionally waited for an overcast day and visited the museum in the morning hours as soon as they opened the doors.Lighting
I waited until the rolling clouds presented a nice mixture of dark and light tones. To obtain the desired composition, I literally got on my knees in the dirt to give the airplane a more dramatic look and capture the contrast between the shiny silver airplane surface and the various gray tones of the sky.Equipment
The photo was shot with a Canon Rebel XSI with a Canon 18-55mm lens - 18mm, f 5.6 at 1/25 second. Handheld.Inspiration
The vintage look of this particular airplane with its sleek silver finish and black propeller looked great contrasting against the cloudy sky. I photographed 50 different airplanes that day, but this one was my favorite.Editing
I processed the photo with Adobe Photoshop elements and used the Topaz Black and White conversion plug in.In my camera bag
Today my main camera is a Canon 60D with an 18-200 lens and a Canon flash unit. I also still carry the Canon XSI for times when the 60D is too bulky for the situation.Feedback
There are many ways to photograph any subject providing you have the time to explore possibilities. Take the time to study your subject and explore different angles, compositions and always be aware of how the background affects your shot.Don't always settle for the obvious shot, try variations and experiment. Be bold.
