Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a beach called Evaristo's Beach in southern Portugal Albufeira, it holds some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet.

Time

This taken at late afternoon, the day was rainy but with some openings. When I got to the location with my girlfriend, we got out of the car, picked up the gear and we just started walking up and down the rocks. Unfortunately after a few minutes of walk it started to rain cats and dogs again we had to run back to the car. I was about to give up and head back home but something told me to wait and so we did. After a while the rain stopped and we ran out of the car like crazies to get to this location and there it was, a magnificent sunset for us to enjoy and share with the world.

Lighting

The light was simply amazing, gorgeous winter sunset just how I like. The reds that come out of the clouds after a rain just when the sun is about to hit the horizon is simply beautiful.

Equipment

This was shot with the Sony A77, Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 and a Sirui Tripod. No filters were used

Inspiration

I always liked to shoot sunsets but what really drives me to do this type of shot is the feel of the rush especially if there is bad weather. Sunsets happen in minutes so we have to be quick and when the weather is bad we never know what we're going to get. Facing the elements makes me feel alive, especially cold weather and winter sunsets are amazing.

Editing

As with all my photos I do post-processing, mostly I just dodge and burn and enhance the colours and contrast. I don't like going heavily on post processing my landscapes because it can be deceiving to others. I just enhance so that others know that when they get to this place they will see it in all it's glory, unless the sea changed it.

In my camera bag

My go to camera for the past years has been the Sony A77 (now the A7 II), the live view of this camera allows me so see on the go how the picture is going to come out, not only that but the movable back screen allows me to get the camera really low and I still see everything without getting in awkward positions. As for lenses I use the Tokina 11-16mm for most landscapes and the Sony 24-105mm for panoramas. A trigger is always helpful when you want to catch that moment without touching the camera. I use Coking Filters, ND grad 3 stops. Lastly and not least important a head lamp, when you go to dangerous places near the cliffs the sun tends to go down really fast so you will need some light to guide you back to safety.

Feedback

Southern Portugal is amazing for coastal photography, although if are not shooting in the fall or winter you will not see the sun set on the ocean, it will set on the western most part of the region. Winter in this part of the country is not as cold as most European countries but I still recommend to pack clothes for some severe cold, humidity and winds at low temperatures are difficult to support. Check out the weather daily and be sure to check at what time the sun sets and it's angle, the photographer's ephemeris is a must have app for smartphone for this type of photography
