Location
This photo was taken on a old mining road in the heart of Alaska's interior that has a great history from gold rush days.Time
I was on my snowmachine heading to some higher ground where the sky would open up to give me a better opportunity to view Alaska's wonderful Aurora. As I was heading towards the high ground lady Aurora started to show her colors, so when I came across a trail I have never been on before I decided to take it as I thought it would get me to the high country faster. After several miles on this trail alone and cold at 2:00 in the morning I came across this cabin with the lights starting to dance above it. At that point I knew I wouldn't make it to the high country this night.Lighting
It was a very cold dark night and, and this little cabin had so much character that I wasn't really able to get the richness of the weather worn lumber to show in my photos. I didn't have a small light to help bring out the detail I could see and came to really want to capture, so I moved my snowmachine and pointed it at just the right angle to cast a low light on it at a idle then would shut it off right away to make sure it wasn't over exposed.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 5d mark III and a Canon 24 mm prime lens on a Really Right Stuff tripod.Inspiration
When the lights from my snowmachine hit this cabin with all its character and the Aurora above I knew I had to photograph it. I couldn't help but think of the people from the early mining days spending cold winter nights in this little place around the wood stove trying to keep warm. Or going to bed in the sunny midnight sun of long summer days after working hard on there claims.Editing
I did some minor processing in Lightroom but not a whole bunch was needed. In my camera bag
I live in Alaska where both wildlife and landscape photography are my passion. So I always have my Canon 5d mark III with several lenses, but my Tamron 15-30 is my go to lens. Always tack sharp for landscape and its really great go to lens for Aurora photography. I also carry my Canon 7d mark II with the Canon 100-400 L II lens together it is the ideal combo for hiking in the back country and In the mountains while getting some quality photos.Feedback
One thing I learned when shooting the Aurora is that check to make sure your focus on the stars is perfect before heading out. I'll check several sets of photos several times on my laptop to ensure its perfect then I always tape it to make sure it doesn't get bumped out of focus. The lights may only appear for a short period sometimes so it helps to scout areas with the right composition ahead of time so when they do appear your ready to capture that special moment.
