Location
This photo was shot in a campground in Lake Livingston Texas, in July 2014. You would have never known it, but it was the hottest week of the year, it was so miserable. This whole session was no more than 10 minutes.Time
I travel to different cities for these sessions, by doing that I don't get to be as selective about lighting as I like to be. I am usually in each city only for a weekend, which means not everyone gets golden hour. This session was in the blazing sun at noon.Lighting
I wanted a soft etherial look with this session. With it taking place at noon the light was very harsh, we used the canopy of trees to filter the sun and a gold reflector to add some soft light back to her.Equipment
I always use an extremely simple set up. No muss no fuss. Canon 5D Mark ii, with a 70-200 lens (sigma)Inspiration
I wanted this image to reflect that there was something bigger than us out there. She looks like she is looking for guidance, asking for prayers. And so sweet and innocent. It worked out exactly as I had hoped it would.Editing
Yes, I love post processing. I shoot everything in raw, I sharpen and color balance and bump the clarity in bridge. After that I always import to photoshop. I have a few actions I have built that meet my needs for my style, that always involves softening the background, enhancing her features, and adding that sweet halo of light. In my camera bag
The only things I travel with are my Mark ii, 70-200, extra cards, and a reflector. I feel like when I am traveling the more equipment I have the more scattered I am. I like to step out of the box often when I am shooting for myself, but for the most part I am very happy with my simple set up.Feedback
The absolute best advice I could give when wanting to capture the innocence of children, is just to let them be. Often times I seen people very concerned over posing, head position, and smiling the perfect way that they forget that children are absolutely magical on their own if we just slow down and see them.
