Location
The photo was taken on a meadow at the end of my street in Munich. It is a very residential area and normally people play soccer on that meadow but at that time of the day it was empty. However, the background used was from another day and was taken in the countryside on a foggy day.Time
As far as I remember I took this photo in the afternoon but in this case it could have equally been taken in the morning because all I needed was an even light on him and since it was overcast, I would have gotten that basically all day long (except for early morning and late night).Lighting
I made sure I shot this on a cloudy day because I knew I wanted to use the background I already had (a foggy landscape shot) and needed to have even light on him and the props used in the photo.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D180 and a 50 mm 1.4 lens. I used a tripod because there were several parts that needed to be put together later and I didn't have an assistant so I had to use a self-timer e.g. for throwing leaves.Inspiration
"The Autumn King" was the first image in my "My Secret Garden" series. The series is inspired by several different fairytales like "Little Red Riding Hood", “Thumbelina" and stories like "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the looking glassâ€. It will have different sub-series but also contain strong individual images. "My Secret Garden" will be an ongoing series because I have lots of ideas and sketches that I still want to work on. My assistant Andreas, who is also the model in this image, was kind enough to let me use the wonderful crown he made and I was able to put the cloak I made the week before to a good first use. In my photo, I wanted to create a king that is kind and that, at the beginning of autumn moves, through the land and brings autumn with him, hence the trail of autumn leaves behind him.Editing
This photo required A LOT of post-processing. I think I worked on it on and off for about 2 weeks. But there were days when I didn't do much or nothing at all on the photo and others where I worked for hours on it. The background had to be changed, several images put together, the leaves had to be cut out and placed, the cloak made longer and of course the light and colors had to be changed to how I wanted them.In my camera bag
I normally only bring my Nikon D810 and my 50 mm 1.4 lens. Sometimes I have my 35 mm 1.8 lens in my bag as well as a reflector but then I hardly ever take it out. If I want more of the frame but not loose any depth of field, I use the Brenizer method for expanding the frame.Feedback
You will have to have a lot of patience when creating those kinds of images! In particular, if you are exchanging the background, it will require a lot of post-processing and changing lots of little things. It is a patience game and sometimes you might want to give up but then, if you push trough, you will be happy in the end if you kept going and it looks great!
