Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Minnehaha Falls Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Time

Because this photo was snapped about 4 or 5 years ago, I can't remember the exact time of day.. but I would guess around 6pm on a Summer, Minnesota night.

Lighting

I selected a spot that was shaded so he had even lighting on his face with no harsh shadows.

Equipment

At the time, I had a Canon 60D and probably a 50mm 1.8 on for this photo.

Inspiration

It was Charlie's 3rd birthday and he LOVED trains! His mom and dad dressed him up as a conductor and we had a lot of fun playing with his toys while I snapped some shots.

Editing

I absolutely did some editing to the photo, but it was many years ago and my workflow has completely changed. It was most likely edited in Photoshop using a free action that I found online.

In my camera bag

At the time this photo was taken, I had a Canon 60D, 50mm 1.8 and 24-70 2.8 Today in my bag you will find a Canon 6D, 50mm 1.2, 35mm f/2, 85mm Petzval, Yongnuo External Flash (this is seriously a cheap flash that works wonders), a prism, a small pipe, my iPhone 6, and for back up I have my Canon 60D.

Feedback

Engage with your subjects. If you're photographing a child, first spend a few minutes getting to know them. Play a quick game with them, or talk to them about something they are interested in so they feel more comfortable with you. Have their parents stand behind you making them laugh!
