Location
This photo has been taken in an old abandoned church in Umbria, Italy. It was the perfect location for the image i wanted to create.Time
It was in the morning, just because of the availability of all the people necessary for this shot.Lighting
I brought with me a single flashgun, a Nikon SB-24, on a tripod with a 60x60 cm softbox, and for all the images of this picture i used that, balanced with the available natural light in the church.Equipment
I used a Nikon D800 Camera with 24-70 mm f:2,8 lens, on a Manfrotto 190 Pro Tripod, a Nikon SB-24 flash on its tripod and a couple of Yongnuo triggers. Caring about the stability of the camera on the tripod the model was put in three different positions and the light has been positioned accordingly.Inspiration
I was assigned to develop a theme: gravity, for the cover of a single music hit, It had to be impactful. I was thinking about a levitation image, and i imagined a sort of fall, representing human condition between evil and good.Editing
This kind of images require post processing techniques. This is the combination of four images. One is for the environment with no model, one is for the levitating model (the model is put on a little stair), and one for each of the other two model positions in the frame. All the images have been put on different layers and manually masked to create a single merged image. The shadow of the levitating model has been created with a 10% overlay layer and a large soft brush. In my camera bag
I normally take a camera body and a couple of lenses, chosen fot the specific kind of images i have to take. Of course a lot of memory cards and batteries.Feedback
Assure you have a stable tripod, and take care about the lack of ANY movement of the camera. use remote control to avoid moving the camera. Take many images of each position, also very little variations captured can make the difference. Ensure that lighting is consistent, give a look at the shadows. But, most of all, you have to have an idea in mind well before the shooting.
