Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken in Southampton Solent University's photography studio. I took it as part of my 'By The Hands' project for one of my assessments.

Time

The actual weather condition don't really matter in this case, because everything was modified in the studio.

Lighting

It was a simple two softbox technique on each side - one for the background and one of the object carrying the tree branch.

Equipment

List: - Canon 550D - 2 x Soft boxes - Light meter - Sync cable

Inspiration

I am generally finding inspiration in everyday subjects, movements, moments and places. For this particular image, I think my friends, whose hand I photographer was very interesting in terms of the way she was posing with the branch. I found it expressive and full of emotions and it was easy to create the feeling I wanted.

Editing

I used some colour replacement and colour adjustment. Nothing too visible. My idea was to keep the original image as it is as much as I can, but to emphasize on the object and create an interesting contrast.

In my camera bag

Normally I try to be portable and move lightly. So my 6D, two lenses - my 50mm 1.8 and 24-105 mm f.4, few SD cards, filters and a grip.

Feedback

My advice would be to get to know your subjects and see what angles compliment the hand and try out different positions. Make sure also that the light you use has been all controlled and don't be afraid to experiment - sometimes best things come unexpectedly!
