What really strikes me with this shot, is the rays of light coming through the windows, the scene with the young girl dwarfed by the huge grand piano, which looks even more awesome in its silhouette form. Really, such great example of skill controlling light in the camera, I am impressed, very well done and am excited now to look through the rest of your gallery, all the best, Lincoln :)

this is a unique image in that there is a great deal of detail and beautiful values in the background, and yet the primary subject delights the eye by leaving so much to the imagination. Great image. Great.

Location
I was on the set doing stills for a TV ad for a food retailer that had sponsored the little girl, who was deaf, to have cochlear implants, which had enabled her to to hear for the first time at age 11.Time
this was shot mid mooring so the sun could be at the right angle for the rays.Lighting
The TV crew were shooting all around her and had put smoke in the hall to soften the lighting but they were shooting in colour not BW. With the rays coming through the smoke and the light behind her it created an perfect silhouette opportunity in BW.Equipment
Canon 550D, 18-135mm, no flash, manual. ISO 100, F5.6, 1/30 secInspiration
It was such an emotive subject as it was and the sun rays shining through the smoke was almost biblical. The composition was important to set her up as the focus in silhouette but to have the detail of the background. BW was the obvious choice to enhance the emotion as the color was looking quite brown with the brick and wooden floors.Editing
Bw and white processing with contrast to deepen the blacks and clean the up the whites but without losing the mid-tones.In my camera bag
Now a days I have a Canon 5D MK III, Canon 16-35 f2.8, Canon 24-70 f2.8, Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS + 2 X extender. Speedlite 565, remote cable, tripod.Feedback
The subject matter is important as to how you are going to treat the shot. When doing BW the trick is to have a range of at least 10 differnt tones ranging from 100% black 100%white in the shot. Often we tend to have to much contrast leaving the shot very stark or on the opposite end not enough contrast leaving the shot grey and dull.
