Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while walking along the beach at Venice, Florida.

Time

I had gone to the beach about an hour before sunset to shoot some photos of the drum circle that is held on the beach every Saturday evening. My goal was to get some shots of the performers playing the drums and some photos of the audience. I had not intended to get any sunset shots because I have way too many of those already. However, just as the sun was about to set behind the Gulf of Mexico I noticed the interesting cloud formation and the boat passing in front of the sun. How could I pass this up? That's what I like about photography: your best shots are the unplanned ones.

Lighting

I am a big fan of backlighting and try to use it to my advantage as often as possible. I thought a silhouette of the boat and it's crew would make for an interesting shot. But I really got lucky as the sun ducked behind the clouds. This diffused the light and spread it across the water. The sun reflecting off the clouds helped to illuminate the water in the foreground which helped to further isolate the subject.

Equipment

Equipment here was a Nikon D200 with a 70-300mm zoom set at 155mm (230mm cropped). Exposure was f8, 1/250 second at ISO 200.

Inspiration

Everything about this photo says "relaxation" to me. I was trying the capture a perfect evening at the beach. Beautiful sunset, people enjoying the water - that was inspiration enough for me. I especially like the little boy scampering up the ladder.

Editing

Post-processing was fairly minimal on this one. I shoot everything in raw so I generally need to do a bit of sharpening and saturation increase. Other than that, this shot is pretty much straight out of the camera, which is one of the reasons I like this photo so much.

In my camera bag

This photo was taken several years ago so I have since graduated to a Nikon D300s, and more recently a full-frame Nikon D750. I generally carry three lenses: a wide angle, a 50mm fixed lens, and a telephoto zoom. My latest lens is a Nikon 28-300mm zoom which is great because it means less lens changes.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to shoot into the sun, but try to position yourself in such a way that the sun is blocked. Otherwise you will get quite a bit of lens flare. (Unless of course you want lens flare, which can be a nice effect if done correctly.) Try to expose for the highlights and let the shadows go to silhouette. Sometimes an outline of your subject is better than one with a lot of detail.
