I couldn't believe this when I saw the result - the ride operator unaware the ride was being photographed, stood still for the entire 10 sec exposure

This is pretty cool. I love the vibrant colours in the light and the use of lines.

Location
This image was taken at the Harvest Festival in Vero Beach, Florida.Time
One of the best times of day to photograph a carnival is after dark. Only then can you create images like this one that can not be seen without photography.Lighting
The fun part of photographing carnivals at night is discovering the patterns created by the lights on the rides - a perfect opportunity to experiment with longer exposures.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 450D with a 18-55mm lens at 28mm. A tripod was absolutely necessary for the 4 sec exposure.Inspiration
I was invited by a friend to go for a night shoot at the Harvest Festival one year. It was a wonderful night - perfect weather and not too large a crowd.Editing
I prefer full-frame compositions. This image had only basic processing in Photoshop. In my camera bag
If I travel with my complete bag, I have 2 camera bodies, 18-55mm wide-angle zoom, 70-250mm telephoto, 100-400mm telephoto, 100mm macro, tripod, monopod, warm polarizing filter, LOTS of memory cards, and spare battery.Feedback
Carnival rides are fascinating to photograph. Digital photography makes it easier, since we can now experiment with exposure times and preview the results. I spent considerable time just watching the movement of the various rides to determine the best point of view and timing within the overall cycle of the ride.
