Location
This photo was taken on the balcony of my office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.Time
It was just after it got dark in the evening and the backdrop was pitch black providing a clean background with no distractions.Lighting
I love experimenting with lighting and positioning. I used a single strobe in a 60x90cm gridded soft box placed directly facing the model. The light fall off along the sides of her face gave this the depth I was looking for.Equipment
Nikon D7000 with a 50mm 1.8 lens, SB700 speed light in a 60x90cm gridded soft box.Inspiration
It was part of a portfolio photo shoot for this young lady and this was from some of the last wrap up shots for the evening.Editing
Skin smoothening, brightness and contrast adjustments in Photoshop. In my camera bag
When I started out I'd carry everything in my bag. Now I'm constantly looking at ways to reduce the number of items I need as I shoot in any available space. My entire studio and travel setup fits in a small backpack i.e. Camera, 50mm, 18-200mm, SB600 & SB700 speed lights, 60x60cm foldable soft box and a 6" lighting grid.Feedback
I'm self taught and experimenting with off camera strobes is one of the aspects of photography that is most rewarding. I've read many tutorials and read as many blogs on how to place your lights etc etc. At the end of the day, I believe there's no right or wrong in lighting. Many times when I've gotten my lighting all wrong (according to experts) the images have actually been some of my best. My advice, experiment and break the rules, you'll be surprised with the results.
