This was captured on a rarely walked street in central Malmö, Sweden during the Autumn.Time
Many people dread a cool, grey Autumn day in Scandinavia. However, I love the fact that this soft, diffused light makes for perfect photographic opportunities at any time of the day. This shot is a prime example, taken in the middle of the day, yet with the light allowing for a beautiful and toned small dynamic range. Don't be confused either by the headlights of the cars, as in Sweden you must drive with the headlights on at all times of the day.Lighting
Only natural light was utilised in this photograph, with a single frame and no need for any HDR treatment, either artificial layering or tone-mapping. As mentioned about the time of day, Sweden can lend itself to giving some wonderful diffused daylight throughout the Autumn and Winters.Equipment
This was captured with my Canon 70D mk1 and Canon 17-35mmL lens.Inspiration
I was in the middle of teaching one of my 'basic photography' courses in Malmö, and always walk this street near the end of the practical part of the course. Here I wanted to demonstrate to the student several parts of the course's techniques coming together to create a photograph from a scene most would walk by without a second thought.Editing
A slight colour adjustment was made to the white balance upon post processing, but that was all.In my camera bag
I am a great lover of Canon equipment, which has never let me down for 15yrs. So I carry a Canon 5Dmk4 and 70D, with lenses: 17-35mm f2.8 L mk1, 24-70mm f2.8 L mk1, 70-200mm f4 L, and 100mm f2.8 L. I do have a Canon speedlite, but don't use this for my street photography.Feedback
The message I was attempting to teach the student in this photograph was to always look for places to put the camera beyond eye level. Walk around a city without a tripod and find parts of the environment to place the camera instead of holding it up to your face. This was simply on the ground, using the camera strap to lift up the lens orientation.
