Behind The Lens
Location
This image was taken at Walkers Flat, South Australia, in the back yard of a friends country property. Behind the rocks is a hill that drops off steeply about 10 metres.Time
Shot in 2008, so I can't recall.Lighting
Luckily the goanna posed in a well lit area, with little shade, so the light was relatively even, although somewhat extreme, as is expected for Australian conditions.Equipment
Device: Nikon D50, Lens: 70-300mm f/4-5.6G, Focal Length: 240mm, Focus Mode: Manual, Aperture: f/5.6, Shutter Speed: 1/500s, Scene Mode: Landscape, ISO Sensitivity: 320, No tripod or flash. Why landscape mode? Because at the time I was in a hurry, and just used whatever settings were already in place at the time.Inspiration
Inspiration was provided by opportunity. It just happened that I was in the right place, at the right time, with the right equipment.Editing
Some cropping and very minor tweaking to optimise contrast and colour were done in Photoshop. In my camera bag
At the time of this image I would have packed: Nikon D50 camera, Nikkor Lenses 18-55 and 55-300, Hoya Polarized filters, Cleaning equipment. Now I have replaced the Nikon D50 with a Nikon D3000, Nikkor Lenses 18-55 and 55-300, Hoya Polarized filters, Hoya ND Variable Filters, cleaning equipment and a tripod.Feedback
Take as many images as possible, with the hope that one might become the winning shot. Stay with the subject as long as you need to achieve your goal and don't waste an opportunity that comes your way. Be patient!
