Location
The photo was taken in the old city, near Place Royale, the square where the city of Quebec started in 1608.Time
The photo was taken around 9PM, on a weekday. It was the first time I was out with my new Sony A7r camera, that I bought just a few days before. It was a very mild winter evening, around minus 3 celsius, which is rare in late December in Quebec City.Lighting
I was experimenting with the technique of exposure blending and this shot is a composite of several photos, taken at different exposure settings.Equipment
Camera: Sony A7r Lens: Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA Tripod: OSN OS 364 LA Ballhead: FLM CB-58 FTR No flash used.Inspiration
Sous-le-fort and Petit Champlain streets are famous for their Christmas decorations during the Holiday season. As the theme of the contest was Holiday Lights, I knew I had to go there to take a beautiful Christmas lights shot. As I was taking the five photos at different exposure, this young tourist couple suddenly appeared and took the pose for their shot. I knew I had to have them in one of mine!Editing
I did the merge in Photoshop with light masks and then retouched the composite photo for colours and tonal contrast, also in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I used to work with a Sigma SD1 camera and a few Sigma lenses, the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM being my favorite. This lens is incredibly sharp. Now, I am so impressed with my new Sony that I will soon sell the SD1 and my Sigma lenses to buy a few more lenses for the A7r. The Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA is the only one I have for the time being. The rest of my equipment is listed above.Feedback
I am too new with this technique to give advice, but you definitely need a tripod to get decent results!
