Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Flathead lake in somers Montana

Time

This was taken on November 14 2014 at around 9AM on a cold winter morning

Lighting

The morning of the shot was real foggy I was not sure what it would be like at the lake so I decided to take a chance on the 30 min drive. When I arrived at the lake the fog was to thick to get a good shot. As i waited I noticed a slight break in the fog as the sun started to rise the colors of the fog began to change. the point i am making is even if you don't have the perfect shot patience pays off if I would have looked at the conditions and left I would not have got this shot.

Equipment

At the time i was shooting with a Nikon D3100 on a Professional Carbon Fiber Tripod with a 18-105 mm lens. Since this photo I have upgraded to a Nikon D7100

Inspiration

I wanted to show the beauty and serenity of the lake on a calm morning I really liked the effect of the light fog on the lake with the heavy fog bank in the distance and when I saw the houseboat it had that added effect almost looked like the boat was going to be swallowed up

Editing

I did very little post processing on the photo ..adjusted the white balance a little enhanced the highlights and played took some shadows out. I use lightroom 5 and try only make very little changes in post processing

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I carry my 18-105 lens my 70-300 lens and my 28 mm wide angle lens. I have 2 extra batteries with my charger and a car adapter I have a 10 stop ND filter a polarizer and a 8 point star filter. I also have my speedlight a remote shutter release my lens cleaning supplies a flashlight ( I do a lot of night photography ) gloves for those cold nights. A small note pad and pen for making notes on shutter speeds f-stop settings and such

Feedback

The best advice I can give is don"give up on the shot. If your not sure if the lighting is right take a test shot the good thing about digital photography is that you can delete and try again. The lighting is always changing when doing any outdoors photography so be patient and be ready because when the lighting is what you want you my only have a matter of minutes to get that one shot that makes you go WOW
