Thank You Everyone! I'm thrilled that this photo was chosen for a featured award. My goal is to get into a magazine someday, hopefully a cover? But a Viewbug feature is just AWESOME! I love this website.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during July 4th on Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Time

This was taken around 9:30 I believe at night. There were two of the main bays that had barges that were filled with all the pyro techniques. I remember getting to the location about 2 hours early to ensure I got a good seating near the water with my family. Also, having a stable place for my tripod that would have the least amount of chance of someone walking in front of my lens.

Lighting

I didn't use any form of lighting, except I was exposing for the dark and dragging the shutter. The show lasted about an hour and in that time minor tweaks to my shutter speed and focus was used to make sure I was at the right settings before the ending.

Equipment

Manfroto Tripod with 3 axis head. Canon 40D with a 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, Canon TC-80N3 remote.

Inspiration

It was the first time that I had ever had the opportunity to capture fireworks over the water. We were on vacation and this was the one opportunity I would have to capture this for the first time.

Editing

I did very little post processing in Lightroom. I adjusted the colors, clarity, and the contrast to make the image pop. This image was not stacked in photoshop. Straight out of camera with very few adjustments to make the fireworks stand out. Since then I have been able to do it again, but have used a few overlays to stack different fireworks. But this was just a bit of luck and good timing to capture this sequence.

In my camera bag

My bag now is full with gear, always have now my Canon 5D mark IV, 50mm, 85mm, 70-200mm f/2.8 L, 24-70mm f/2.8 L II, and most of the time if planning on doing landscapes I'll trade out my 85mm for my 16-35mm f/4 L ii lens. Manfroto 190 series Tripod with 3 axis head. Also, have at least one canon flash with Godox trigger. This all goes into a manfroto back pack with all my lens cloths, cleaners, remotes, batteries, and cards. My bag weighs a lot but, it always has what I need.

Feedback

Have fun, don't panic when the show starts. Click the remote check your images, and adjust as needed. Its all trial an error, and with this image a lot of luck. Being able to sense when the sparks will appear takes some time. My intent wasn't to be able to capture this image, it really was just an experiment and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Good Luck!
