Before I say anything, I have to give credit to my girlfriend, model, and photographer Misty Teller, who co-owns Mystic Photography with me. She and I are equally involved in every shot that we take and edit. We took this photo in downtown Rochester, MI, which was a first for us. We love shooting in new places!Time
This was taken around 2PM. We have no real preference for what time of day to shoot. Usually some time after 10 AM works for us, because we both have other full-time jobs and we like to sleep in on our "shooting days!"Lighting
we used the natural light that was available at the time. No flashes or anything were used or needed.Equipment
We shot this with a Canon Rebel T3i with an 18-35 3.5f lens. Nothing more, nothing less.Inspiration
We had cigarettes, a chair that just happened to be in the area, and an umbrella as our only props. I would say that the props, themselves, inspired us more than anything. That had been the case very often with us!Editing
I nearly always do quite a bit of post-processing. I tend to look as the photo as the canvas for creating something even more interesting. As long as I can make the photo a bit more unique and interesting than the original photo, not to mention believable, I am happy. The smoke, rain, and no smoking sign were added in Photoshop. Misty was originally balancing the umbrella on the model's knee, and she was removed in post-production as well.In my camera bag
We have a Canon 70d, a Canon Rebel T3i, and 3 lenses. Being simple works for us. We work with what we have and we don't feel we need a lot of fancy equipment to create great images.Feedback
Come prepared to a shoot with multiple props and themes. The more options you have, the better chance you will have of capturing something great. We keep a notebook of photoshoot ideas with us and bring it to every shoot. We try to nail as many as we can, and whatever doesn't turn out, we will bring that idea to the next shoot and keep attempting it until we get it just right. :)
