Location
This photo was taken from the Rialto Bridge. We had just finished dinner at the restaurant featured in the photograph, and it was a beautiful summer evening.Time
It was about 9:30 at night, day tourists had left the city and it was less crowded yet lively. It made it easier to find a good vantage point to take the photograph. I was trying to capture the ambiance of the restaurant- the bustling of the waiters and the clinking of the wine glassesLighting
It was much darker than the picture shows and some of the lamps were confusing the autofocus so i switched to manual.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon 3200 and a Sigma 18-250 mm lens. I had tired kids with me so there was no time for a tripod. I used the bridge to brace myself and avoid moving the camera as i was shooting at very low speeds. The flash was off, and it was so dark I was not very sure i was capturing what i wanted!Inspiration
I wanted to capture the mood of our dinner. We had just left the restaurant, the waiters had been extra nice and the food quite good. I loved that the gondola station was right next to the restaurant. The scene captured so many of the things I love about Venice- the Rialto where the photograph was taken from, the restaurants that serve great Italian meals, the Gondoliers that are so iconic to Venice and of course, the Grand Canal!Editing
My camera has no bracketing so I applied HDR effects once I got home. I duplicated the photograph and changed the exposure not the two copies. Then I merged the thee images with Photomatix for Aperture. I was very pleased with the result as now i was able to see the gondoliers clearly, as well as the people sitting at the tables. In my camera bag
I usually just have my DSLR and my Sigma lens with me on my daily outings, but i travel with a Nexto DI portable hard drive to back up my photos, and ipad, extra batteries and lens cleaners.Feedback
If you can, scout out the spot before, that way you can fight the throngs of tourists for that specific spot. Nothing more disappointing than fighting your way to the front and then finding your view is blocked by an ugly post!
