This photo was taken in Denver, CO at York Street Crossfit. I took this image right before a workout. I love shooting in black and white as it allows me to really look at filling the frame with the right amount of light and dark to draw you into the center of the image.Time
This image was taken on a warm summer evening in Denver. I remember thinking what a perfect evening it was as all the doors to the gym were open and and there was a summer thunder storm was billowing in from the Rockies to the west. I felt like this image captured the calm before the storm in two forms. The storm clouds were forming and the smell of rain was in the air. Meanwhile here in the gym the anticipation of the intense workout was quite and calm.Lighting
The lighting was unique. The graying storm clouds offered perfect diffused light. I also used a cannon 600EX-RT flash at 25 m and 1/3 power handheld slightly off center of the camera. The flash highlighted my subject.Equipment
This was Shot with a Canon 5D MKIII and a Canon 600EX-RT flash.Inspiration
Inspiration strikes at any moment that is why I always try to carry a camera with me. I was inspired to take this photo because everyday I would be at the gym looking at all these little moments that take place before the big ones. The main event is always captured, but often times it is the preparation that is overlooked and forgotten.Editing
I sharpened the image a little and darkened the blacks. I wanted to leave this as close to the way it was shot as possible. In my camera bag
Recently I have started carrying my Canon Eos M, 22mm, 18-55mm, and a Lume cube. I get around the city by train and bus (because traffic is a nightmare) and my equipment small enough to fit into my commuter bag. The image quality and the compactness of the camera, lenses, and lighting make it great equipment to capture lots of quality images without lugging my 5D and lenses around!Feedback
Take photographs all the time, shoot in monochrome, see light and the way it reacts with the environment. A lot of things happen when no one is paying attention. Train yourself to look for the seconds in between events. Sometime the best images are captured by mistake!
