Don't you just love Richmond Park :-) Great photo though... Have tried to take this sort of pic in The Highlands; will try Richmond come rutting season!

Behind The Lens
Location
The last place you would expect to find Red deer fighting it out for the ladies is in London- this was taken in Richmond Park during the Red Deer rutt in October.Time
The day had delivered all kinds of weather at us - we started with a great sunrise, followed by 3 hours of heavy rain - but the weather forecast was predicting a sunny end to the day - so after 10 hours in the Park we were rewarded by the most stunning sunset and this was one of the photos which was the result.Lighting
we positioned ourselves directly facing the sun to get the ultimate back lit shot and were just hoping that it would all fall into place. This stag was charging around and came out of the bracken with his antlers full - and ended up being slightly side lit with a low sun.Equipment
Canon 70d with a 300m F2.8 lens with a 1.4 converter - with a Gtizo tripod - it was all getting a bit heavy late in the day! I ummed and arred about going back to the car to get extra memory cards but i was so glad i did!Inspiration
I liked the way the bracken was glistening in the sunlight - almost like jewels.Editing
once downloaded all i did was basic sharpening and that was it !In my camera bag

Stick it out whatever the weather - if there is a chance of a sunset get yourself in position early and work out what you are going to do and be prepared to move. As ever with Red deer especially during the rutt safety is paramount - we moved back 3 or 4 times with this stag and he strutted around getting more and more steamed up during the late afternoon. So you need to be able to pick up your gear quickly as move back slowly and steadily till the animal is comfortable.
