Location
This photo was taken on top of "Round Bald" on Roan Mountain along the Applicachain Trail. The TN/NC state line also splits this area.Time
I had gotten up super early (like 4am) to drive out here before sunrise. I live about and hour and thirty minutes away, plus there's another 10 or 20 minutes or so to hike up the trail to this area. So this is about 7:30am or so in March, so it's also pretty cool out.Lighting
The light is all natural from the rising sun and diffusing through and off of the little bit of cloud cover that there is.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS 40D with the EF-S 10-22mm lens at 22mm, f/16. I think it was handheld, but I'm not sure as it was 2012. I may have been using a tripod as I'm not sure this camera did auto bracketing!Inspiration
I when up there to capture sunrise along the Appalachian Trail.Editing
This was a 4 shot HDR processed in Photomatix Pro a couple times and then I think there was some hand blending of those in Photoshop. It's been awhile (2012) so I don't remember exactly now.In my camera bag
Nowadays, I usually have a Panasonic GX8 or the Olympus OMD EM-1, but usually the Panasonic. I have the Olympus PRO 8-14, 12-40, 40-150 (with 1.4x TC), and 60mm macro, all f/2.8s, plus a Panasonic 100-300mm f/4-5.6 which is generally my wildlife lens unless I need the speed of the 2.8 over distance. I generally go handheld in most cases unless it's astrophotography or waterfalls.Feedback
Be ready for an early morning! Also, this area in particular, is hard to predict how foggy it might be in the morning. Sometimes you are up in a cloud which is a whole nother scene! It can also be very gusty, so hang on to your tripod if you use it!
