There is nothing like an idyllic summertime journey down a calm river in the forest when ... CHOMP! Out of nowhere comes an unseen reptile. His gaze is set upon you, dinner time. He is quiet, cunning, like a submarine just surfaced on the water. But there is no fear, there is fascination as how could she get to this part of the river so quietly. She floats, seemingly oblivious to her surroundings, yet you know where she looks. Now that you see her, she is the Unexpexted Alligator.

This photograph was taken in April of 2011 on Quantico Creek in Prince William Forest Park in Virginia. It uses High Dynamic Range (HDR) and digital post-processing techniques to achieve its stunning effects.
