The photo was taken at the city park Boonville City Lake down the street from my house in Boonville, Indiana. It's a beautiful little park that has picnic areas, a water park, fishing and just a great place to take a stroll around the lake. I occasionally go down to the lake to take photos of the ducks. Taking photos of their antics is a great learning experience. It's a test of agility in speed and patience.Time
It had rained all weekend, with severe storms and tornadoes that had gone through Illinois and Indiana. All the sudden the rain stopped and the sky cleared up. The one thing that I have learned about living in the Midwest is that after Mother Nature executes her wrath on us she tends to apologizes by producing beauty. I grabbed my camera, jumped in my truck and headed down the street to the lake. After parking, I got out my truck, snapped a shot adjusted my settings and started shooting. When I got to the sidewalk that circles the lake, standing in 6 inches of water I saw the most magnificent sunset. I started taking pictures gradually adjusting the setting and moving inch by inch until I got the perfect image. The picture was taken on November 17, 2014 at 6:13pm central time.Lighting
There was nothing special about the lighting. The sky was beautiful with magnificent puffy clouds. The sun was in perfect position to produce the great reflections in the water. It was luck and timing.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G VR lens. No other equipment used.Inspiration
This was for a photography class final. I was a Graphic Arts student that knew I needed to know a little something about photography. I was on a tight schedule. My project was actually about trees and how lonely they look in the fall when they start losing their leafs. I had been up and out at sunrise and sunset for weeks, but the weather was not cooperating. I finally got a break and lucky. This was also a defining moment when I realized how much I enjoy photography.Editing
I adjusted the white balance in this photo. I made second copy that I adjusted the white balance completely down. It gave the sun a lot more definition which I found less appealing. I kicked up the vibrancy and clarity very slightly to help define the clouds reflection in the water. In my camera bag
I normally just carry my camera and lens in my camera bag. Occasionally I have my tripod with me.Feedback
You have to always be ready to capture a landscape. I have found if you're to get a perfect shot your camera has to be attached to you. You need to be diligent about paying attention and researching when and where the sun is going to rise or set in order to be in the right place at the right time. It also has to do with timing and persistence. Sometimes its luck and sometimes it's the gut feeling as mine was with this photo. Most importantly you must always have your camera ready.
