Location
The shot was taken on my local beach - my favorite place to shoot. 50 meters from my back door and my toes are in the water. A fantastic place to try and capture the spirit of nature and the coastal Australian lifestyle.Time
October 13th 2014 at approximately 05:30 after my morning run while I was at the beach to cool off. I am a "morning person" so this is no trouble for me at all.Lighting
I actually love the lighting in this image. It is very strongly backlit as I was shooting a sunrise (the sun is at the horizon just off the right of the image) and the warm tones completely complement the natural colourings of "Bug" (my dog). It has resulted in one of my favorite images I have ever taken of Bug.Equipment
I was using an Olympus OM-D E-M1 with a M.Zuiko Digital 12-40mm f2.8 PRO lens. It is hand-held while I was standing in shallow water on the shore and the POV has me holing the camera about a foot above the water.Inspiration
There is so much to celebrate in and around my world and my life that it begs documentation. I love to shoot the things I love (I suppose we are all like that) and these are a couple of the things that I love. My dog, the beach and sunrise what a great combination of things to inspire me.Editing
This shot was one I almost deleted it without giving it a chance. The strong backlight resulted in Bug being very dark and requiring correction. A few slides in Lightbox and I had one of my absolute favorite shots I have taken. The shadows needed to be lightened a lot and the clarity and vibrance were bumped a little. The relatively "heavy-hand" that was needed needed to bring the life to the shadows resulted in the halo around Bug but rather than detract from I think in this case it actually enhances the image greatly. In my camera bag
An Olympus OM-D E-M1 with a M.Zuiko Digital 12-40mm f2.8 PRO lens and theM.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO lens is pretty much all the photography equipment I own.Feedback
The time tested formula of shooting at dawn and at dusk cannot be overstated. Virtually every great photo I have taken has been at the start or end of the day. Get up early and enjoy it, photograph the things you love. Try experimenting with different points of view; get down low - at least as low as your subject. By walking out into the water a little way the foreground becomes a feature of interest to enhance the overall image.
