Location
This was shot at the neighborhood pond on a fine spring morning.Time
I snapped this early in the morning as these ducklings nestled down to dry off after their swim.Lighting
Early morning sunlight was glinting off from the water droplets, which is part of what caught my attention. I liked the contrast between the delicate whispy down poofing off from the ducklings and the coarse blades of the grass in the foregroundEquipment
Camera: Canon EOS 7D, f/10.0, 1/50 at ISO: 100 with a Canon 70-200 lensInspiration
My wife and I always ooh and awe at how cute the ducklings are and make an effort to get a few shots of them each spring. We make several "expeditions" during the spring to practice our wildlife and nature photo technics.Editing
I cropped this a little bit to improve the composition and used Lightroom to punch up the black just a touch. I strive to "get it right in the camera" and try to do very little post-processing.In my camera bag
When I'm strolling around the pond I typically carry a single lens and focus on learning how to get good images with it. I also have Canon 28-135 that I use for street photos, a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 that does double duty as a landscape and natural light lensFeedback
Since this was at a neighborhood pond, the ducklings are already used to people and congregate around free food. Using a long lens and being fairly still allowed me to get a very close-up shot. Since it was early in the morning I had to pay attention to the light angle and keep my shadow out of the way as well.
