Behind The Lens

Location

On Long Island, NY there is an American Airpower Museum, full of vintage war planes, that is gracious enough to allow a group of us photographers to do a pinup style photo shoot every year.

Time

Right around sunset the light across the open airstrip turns the sky bright yellows and oranges and provides a beautiful backdrop of colors and dramatic clouds while streaming through the model's hair.

Lighting

This shot was taken just after sunset and was light mostly with an on-camera ring flash. I not only like the effect of diminishing the shadows but also love the way you get an overall falloff of light creating a soft vignette that focuses the viewer's eye to the center of the image where the subject is.

Equipment

Canon 5D, Canon 24-70mm lens, ring flash, hand held/no tripod.

Inspiration

I've always love the cheeky, playful images of pinup style, when I had to opportunity to do a shoot at the Airpower Museum I couldn't pass up the chance. With this particular model, she is beautiful, knows her poses, provides her own wardrobe, she is always right on, you can't take a bad picture of her.

Editing

Yes as a professional photo-reoucher I alway shoot with the intention of retouching afterwards. In this case I didn't need to do too much, just a little brightness and contrast to make the image pop.

In my camera bag

Lot's of batteries, a couple sets of rechargeable AA's for the flash, a couple of camera batteries, and chargers for both. Also a couple of memory cards and backup device. Ring flash, and only the one zoom lens.

Feedback

Have a team of people, hair and makeup artists, wardrobe stylist, a model who knows what to do, and a good location doesn't hurt either.
