Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a little bistro on top of a hill overlooking downtown Prague in the Czech Republic.

Time

My friends and I made it to this restaurant at the top of a hill after walking the cobblestone streets of Prague all day. It was just before sunset, and we enjoyed dinner and espresso before stepping outside to admire the beautiful sunset.

Lighting

The light was coming from restaurant fixtures, as well as the large, open double doors to the left.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon Rebel t3i, and the 18-55 mm kit lens, handheld.

Inspiration

In the United States, coffee is somewhat of an afterthought at most restaurants. In Europe, it is treated with the dignity and care it so rightly deserves! I love the way each cup gets served on a tray with cream, sugar, and sometimes cookies. I thought this set looked clean and elegant, and the light reflecting off the metal tray was so nice I had to photograph it.

Editing

I used Lightroom to crop it just a little and warm the color slightly.

In my camera bag

My Canon Rebel t3i along with a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens for portraits and general use, plus my Canon 18-55 mm lens for when I need the wider angle. I recently added a Pentax K1000 35mm film camera that belonged to my grandfather, and the 50mm lens that goes with it. I'm loving the experience of shooting film and the look it gives my photos.

Feedback

Always look for the light! Also, if something gives your eyes joy to look at, photograph it! We were certainly surrounded by more obviously beautiful shots (castles, cobblestone streets etc), but this simple scene begged to be shot.
