This is about as good as life on this earth gets! Lovely lady, tight loops, fall weather, all perfectly captured. Can't tell you how much I love this!

Location
I took this photo just outside of Ketchum, Idaho, in an area where the Bigwood River collects to form the Hulen Meadows pond.Time
This photo was captured at the peak of one of the most epic sunsets I've seen in this area.Lighting
The lighting during this sunset was off the charts. Sun beams passed in and out over a saddle to the right, helping illuminate Baldy (the ski mountain in the background), while the clouds exploded into a light show of purples, pinks and reds. In order to light the woman fishing and capture the fishing line mid cast, I filled with a single off camera flash modified with a magnifier.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 24-105 f/4L, Canon 580EX speedlight w/ Magnifier, Manfrotto tripod, PocketWizardsInspiration
On this day, I was leading our local Worldwide Photowalk. I had taken our group through a few locations, and had coordinated to that this fisher-woman cast for us. Knowing that we stood a good chance of a powerful sunset based on the fall storms passing through, I was hoping for exactly this type of sunset. I also knew I'd end up with a silhouette of her if I were to capture the background with a proper exposure, so I planned ahead with off camera speedlights. All things came together at exactly the right moment, and this stands out as one of the most memorable photographic events in my shooting career thus far.Editing
I slightly cropped the photo, did basic contrast, white balance and sharpening in Lightroom, and boosted the vibrance and micro-contrast in Photoshop. My goal was to have the photo represent the scene as it occurred on this magical evening. In my camera bag
I always run with two camera bodies, ideally of the same make, for quick transition between lenses. I have two Canon 5D Mark III, and my go-to lenses include: 16-35mm f/4 L, 24-70 f/2.8 II L, 70-200mm f/2.8mm II L, 135mm f/2.0 L, and the 200-400mm f/4 w/ 1.4X extender. I also carry a slew of filters (ND, Graduated ND, Polarizers), and speedlights with PocketWizards.Feedback
The key to capturing this photo was planning, practice, and of course, great luck with amazing lighting. I had scouted this location a number of times, and knew the exact perspective that I wanted, and what time I needed to be there. I kept a close eye on the weather, and hoped the clouds would behave exactly as they did here. While this would have been a nice landscape image in its own, I arranged for a "model" to add personal intrigue and take it to the next level. Lastly, I brought the right gear to make it happen--without the off-camera flash, the model would have been a silhouette and her fishing line would have been invisible. Imagine, think ahead, and make it happen. Happy shooting!
