This photo was taken in my living room, we recently became the proud owner of an 18 month old Springer Spaniel called Kieber, he had only been with us a day or so and was settling in well. He is a very cheeky inquisitive dog and as I sat talking to him he had this expression on his face that was almost human, like he was really paying attention to what I was saying! So as I am a keen photographer I had my camera nearby I decide to try grab a picture of him. As I turned to him with my camera and said"Kieber look at me" he tucked his lip under like Elvis and gave me an expression which looked like he was saying " who me"Time
This photo was taken around March time about 8pm in my living roomLighting
As the shot was purely spur of the moment, the lighting was just general room lighting ( very poor), but I got away with it!Equipment
Camera was a Nikon D7100 with the 18-105 kit lens as that was the closest to meInspiration
I love taking pictures of dogs, they have such individual personalities, my portpholio is full of pictures of dogs, mainly Kieber.Editing
I ran it throught Lightroom 5, making adjustments to the exposure, highlights and bought out the shadows added clarity and sharpened it a littleIn my camera bag
My bag is always full, I have my Nikon D7100 body, Nikon 30 and 50mm primes, Tokina 12-24mm and a Nikon 70-300VRII and a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII I also carry a range of Lee filters for my landscape photography. My Manfrotto mono and tri-pods are always in my car for when I need them also. I also carry a Nikon SB910 speed light and a range of light modifiersFeedback
It's hard to give much advice to get a shot like this as it was a spur of the moment shot, I grabbed my camera and the nearest lens, camera was set to aperture priority so as the light was so poor I selected the widest appature and the highest ISO i thought I could get away with! The photo isn't technically great, it's not the sharpest, the lights not to good but the image tells the story and hopefully makes you smile and sometimes that's all you need! My other images of my dog displayed on ViewBug are technically better because they were planned, I find that when taking pictures of animals one of the most important aspects is to get a nice quick shutter speed as they are so unpredictable and never stay still! My final piece of advice is to literally say cheese to the dog and wave some in front of his face as I can get most dogs to do as I ask if they think they are getting a piece of cheese for their effort!
