It was after dark about an hour from midnight...Lighting
The lighting In this image is quite special because most of it was out of my control. The storm provided the epic lightning from above lighting up all that falling rain above the cyclist that is rounding the bend with a lamp on himself. The foreground lighting is just standard light painting me. In this 30 sec exposure the lighting struck many times above the streak that is the moving cyclist.Equipment
Nikon d700 with nikon 18-35g lens on a RRS tripod. A flashlight for my foreground and that's it besides a shutter release.Inspiration
First of I love the possibly to shoot lightning and when it can be over water it makes me stay and wait!! Lol I was shooting photos of an oncoming storm and during the time of snuck up on me fasting expected so I don't run over a couple hills and once I got back to my car there is a small shelter there and I'll come right over ahead and write a dark about three cyclist got on the trails are going to run late this is going to be amazing so there's lightning striking over heading always just on your crazy well the cyclist are just coming around to the second-to last bend. I waited for the bike route around the bend and Susie rounded it I hit my shutter for a 30 second timer...I knew is just going to be amazing because there was a one main strike right above them.Editing
I used Lightroom to control the highlights of the Lightning bolt and increase the shadows in the foreground.. It was truly an image that didn't need much too it.In my camera bag
Nikon d700 Nikon 85g 1.8 Nikon 18-35g 3.5-4.5 Really Right Stuff tripod and ball head Extra batteries and cardsFeedback
Follow the weather and the path of storms... And it's best you put yourself in its path and let it pass over you instead of chasing it and catching the tail end rushing yourself. Always be safe! I was under a shelter while the storm was going on so I didn't have to take crazy precation to keep my gear from getting wet. Adjust you settings to where the Lightning is just barely over exposed or isn't at all and that is a good starting point. It all matters what time of day is it, along with and the amount of light the Lightning is giving out to determine what will be the best route. Lightning abound all else is my most frustrating subject to shoot! When your patience is rewarded with a image to be proud of makes it worth it all!
