This photo was taken in my living room's bay window. This is Moose's (yes, she is a shih tzu mix) favorite spot in the whole house as she can watch all the cars and people go by.Time
It was late morning/early afternoon. Since this window in my house faces north, the sun comes in, but isn't too powerful. My puppy's face was in the middle and since the sun was more towards the left, I went to her left to take the shot.Lighting
It is a bit difficult to get around her eyes as the eye itself is dark, but it also has gray/black fur surrounding it as well. Since the light was shining brightly, I was able to get all the detail. Also, since the light wasn't directly shining into the window, I got some diffused light to ensure coverage and to not blow out the whole white part of the face.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Rebel 50mm f1.8.Inspiration
I was really getting more into photography and really, my only subject at the time was my puppy. I loved how she rested her head on the windowsill, but made sure she was still ready to alert us of any intruders! ;)Editing
I converted the photo to black and white because it gave more emphasis to her eyes and to show off the detail of her nose. Other than that, i just made her eyes shine a bit more brightly. In my camera bag
Since this photo was taken, I have upgraded my body to a Canon 5D Mark iii, which I love! I do still use my nifty fifty (50mm 1.8) all the time, especially for indoor portraits. It is just small and inexpensive, so it is truly an amazing value. I also saved up for the 70 - 200mm 2.8 and that is incredible. My husband also has gotten me some lensbaby lenses which are really fun and I love being creative with my everyday shots using those. Great idea to put on your wishlist!Feedback
Just keep moving and practicing. I have a million and one shots of my dog in this window since it is her favorite spot, but I got this image because I was constantly moving and trying different angles. I tried from the top, I tried from behind, then I realized I could fit in the side for a beautiful profile. Also, think about why you are making a photo black and white. I like to use black and white to accentuate something, like her eyes and nose in this shot. Have fun and experiment!
